About the 183 South Project

CTRMA Bergstrom Expressway

The US 183 corridor from US 290 to SH 71 is one of Austin’s most important arterials. Since US 183 was constructed in the mid 1960s, the roadway has been a four-lane divided highway with minor improvements. As the primary route to and from the Austin Bergstrom International Airport and points beyond, it attracts more than 60,000 cars and trucks a day.

Since 2011, the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority (Mobility Authority) and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) have been working with agencies and the community to develop a reasonable and feasible approach to improve mobility in the US 183 South corridor. On March 6, 2015, TxDOT approved the Environmental Assessment by issuing a “finding of no significant impact.” This public decision document briefly describes why the project will not have any significant environmental effect, and it essentially allows the 183 South Project to proceed from the study phase to final design and construction.

The 183 South Project, which will open to traffic in phases, will offer a non-stop, signal-free route to the airport while preserving and enhancing the non-tolled frontage lanes.  


The Mobility Authority is dedicated to having real, positive impacts on people’s drive times and quality of life. Central Texas is one of the fastest growing regions in America, and the Mobility Authority is working to create transportation solutions that meet our growing community.

The 183 SOUTH PROJECT will include:

• Three new toll lanes and three improved non-tolled general purpose lanes in each direction
• New bicycle lanes, sidewalks, and shared use paths for pedestrians and cyclists
• Landscaping and aesthetics improvements along the corridor

When completed, those looking to bypass traffic congestion have a choice to use the 183 South toll lanes. Drivers who prefer not to pay a toll will still have the option to use the improved non-tolled frontage lanes.


The 183 South Project will break ground in early 2016, and construction is projected to last for about 5 years. The total project cost will be approximately $743 million. The construction will take place in phases, with phase one improvements, between US 290/290 Toll and Bolm Road expected to be complete in late 2019. The second phase will open to traffic about a year later.

In addition to roadway construction and improvements, the project will include the following enhancements:

  • Reconstruction of existing overpasses at Springdale Rd., MLK Blvd. and Airport Blvd. 
  • Construction of new Direct Connectors at SH 71 to facilitate those movements
  • Rehabilitation of the steel truss bridge over the Colorado River
  • A trailhead at the Colorado River for bicyclists and pedestrians

The Mobility Authority has a strong commitment to adding bicycle and pedestrian facilities to all of our roadway projects. The 183 South Project is no exception. Over $25 million is being invested in building bicycle and pedestrian facilities as part of this project. We are excited to have the opportunity to bring these multimodal connections to the community.

We are always committed to environmental sensitivity in our corridors and will be protecting large oak trees as well as managing water quality during construction.

The Mobility Authority will have an extensive outreach program dedicated to construction communication, to include a phone/email hotline, twitter account, email/text alerts, eNewsletter and blog posts. The goal is keep traffic moving and make drivers aware of construction-related slowdowns and closures.
